Hare Krishna: A Religious Vista Religious Shrine
Project Type
Religious Shrine - Commercial
Date
Fall 2022
Location
Statue of Liberty Complex, New York City, NY
Description
The goal was to design a religious shrine pavilion that honors the worshipers of Hare Krishna. Located in New York City, this is for a new initiative celebrating United States diversity at the Statue of Diversity Complex. The Hare Krishna religion is a part of Hinduism, so conventional Hindu motifs and architecture were used with influences of nature. The floor plan follows the concept of a peacock feather through the use of the opulent sculpture with the massive plant seen in the middle of the plan. As a peacock feather can be seen in the deity Hare Krishna’s turban, the feather is said to reduce the trouble in life. This will be seen through the ease of movement and accessibility that the space possesses. This concept can also be seen through the curved lines used in the ramp that welcomes users into the worship space. A variety of conventional Indian inspired materials such as checker-board is seen in the marble used in the worship space.
